How are the CLC forums moderated?
Added: 01/13/2008

This answer is a complicated one considering there are several entities using the CLC forums.

The "Christmas Lights Community Forums" section of the web site is moderated by the CLC Administration Team. The CLC-AT also retains moderator rights over every state forum as well. However, those moderation rights are used in extremely rare instances.

State Forums have the moderator(s) listed at the bottom of each forum. Each state chapter will, over time, develop their own style of moderation.

Past experience with Texas Christmas Lights has taught us that very little moderation is needed in the state forums for one reason. The local and state gatherings give us a chance to know each other, which reduces the need for online moderation of posts. People are much less likely to post something derogatory towards someone they've previously met in person.

Thread Moving Policy
Added: 01/25/2008

This policy covers the movement of threads from a STATE forum to the NATIONAL forum.

The Christmas Lights Community forums is broken down into state forums, with membership limited to members of those states. The national section is open to every CLC member.

At the request of the thread creator, the thread may be moved from a state forum to the national forums. All users are advised that posts they make in their state forum may be moved to the national forums.

Any thread within the community may be moved from a state forum to the national forums at the discretion of the CLC Administration team.

Policy for multiple threads with the same solicitation
Added: 02/17/2008

This policy deals with how sales solicitations are handled within the Christmas Lights Community Forums. This policy applies to any thread located within a state or national forum.

CLC and its related state sites allow the posting of "For Sale" and "Wanted" type items by individuals as well as vendors. While we welcome these types of messages, we require that all messages for a particular solicitation be posted within the original thread. Starting of a new thread for the same solicitation is strongly discouraged, and the CLC Administration reserves to edit/merge/delete these new threads as they see it.

By bumping your thread to the top and adding new information to an existing thread reduces redundant threads, your information is kept in the same place, and ensures your information gets visibility. When your deal or event is past, you are welcomed to either leave the information or have it removed if its continued existence will not prove useful.

Other Christmas Sites
Added: 03/11/2008

This policy addresses how and when we reference other Christmas related message boards.

The Christmas lighting community is a large one, and we are not the only site out there. In fact, we owe a great deal of gratitude to some of these other sites for allowing us to advertise our organization.

CLC encourages it's members to be apart of these dynamic on-line communities. Not only are members encouraged to participate, but it's perfectly acceptable to reference a thread or a post made in another forum.

However, there are times when these communities may have issues with a particular post, thread, user or overall performance. When these events happen, it is the policy of CLC that we do not comment on these issues. Christmas lighting is supposed to be a positive hobby, not one filled with disdain towards other people. While we may have our differences, we will not air them in public.

Members who violate this policy may have their thread/post removed without notice. Further disregard for this policy may result in a loss of posting privileges.

Dispute Resolution Process
Added: 04/18/2008

The human aspect of communications is lost in the digital world. Often times, one person is simply being sarcastic, while the other person takes great offense to the comment. Other times, there are technical issues that make it appear as if an action was deliberate, when in fact it was due to a data base error, configuration problem, or a combination of factors.

There are, however, many ways in which a problem can be dealt with. It is not necessary to involve the entire community with these types of issues. 99% of the time a simply email/PM/phone call can clear up issues, and prevent the hard feelings that inevitably result.

CLC strongly discourages the use of "good bye" posts in the forums. These types of posts are where a user decides that they've been wronged, and decide they are going to leave with a 'bang.' They often include false statements about the organization, or another person. Members who post these types of message may be in for a rude surprise. Their accounts may be deleted without warning.

How can you avoid this fate? Simple! Talk to your local coordinator, state coordinator, or a member of the CLC Leadership Council. One of these people can assist you in resolving a problem. As previously stated in this policy, there are many times when a simple email/PM/phone call can resolve an issue.

Username Change Policy
Added: 04/18/2008 (Previously listed under "How Do I...?")

The only circumstances that a username change will be granted is if you are changing your username to your real name.

Any other username change requests will be denied.

Thread Locking Policy
Added: May 26, 2008, Modified July 2, 2008.

This policy covers how and when a thread may be closed.

Threads can be closed by any moderator or administrator preemptively based on their best judgment about whether the thread is acutely counter to the goals of CLC. That being said, off-topic conversation is allowed in certain forums, and is generally seen as a positive influence on developing the community. Inflammatory posts, again counter to community development, without merit to the Christmas light community, are not tolerated.

Off-topic threads found in on-topic (Christmas-related) forums should be moved to the closest state or national off-topic forum by a moderator. Threads "loosely" realated to the forum topic may remain based on a judgement of the moderator.

Further, posts and threads can be deleted completely in certain circumstances such as being profane, slanderous, or upon the request of the poster. Discussions evolve, and topics that become inapprorpiate are subject to this policy as well.

These actions are not intended to stifle conversation within the forums. Rather these actions are taken to protect the community as a whole.

Closing and deleting threads are a judgment call, and moderators occasionally make mistakes. If you disagree with the movement, closing or deletion of a thread, you are encouraged to contact the moderator or site administrator. Threads can be un-deleted or re-opened if necessary.
